Volkswagen Tiguan Service and Repair Manual: Compass System

General Information

Note

  • Before troubleshooting or servicing, the technicians must be familiar with the function and operation of the compass system. Refer to the Owner's Manual
  • Use "Guided Fault Finding" when servicing or performing Fault Finding using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
  • After connecting the Battery -A-, check all the vehicle accessories such as the radio, the clock and the convenience electronics.
  • If a magnetic antenna is mounted on the roof, the compass module could malfunction due to interference from the magnet or because the roof becomes magnetized. If there are concerns about an incorrect compass display, ask the customer before beginning repairs if a magnetic antenna was used.

The compass includes the display inside the instrument cluster -arrow- and the Compass Magnetic Field Sensor -G197- under the rear shelf.

The current compass direction, in which the vehicle is directed, is displayed via the compass display with up to 2 letters (N = north, NW = northwest). 8 different compass directions can be displayed.

Compass Magnetic Field Sensor -G197-/Vehicle Location Recognition Control Module -J603-

The Compass Magnetic Field Sensor -G197- is installed with the Vehicle Location Recognition Control Module -J603-.

The Compass Magnetic Field Sensor -G197- is attached to the rear of the roof near the roof end strip.

Removing
  • Turn off the ignition and all electric consumers and remove the key.
  • Lower the rear headliner.
  • Remove the Compass Magnetic Field Sensor -G197--1- from the roof with a small screwdriver.
  • Release and disconnect the connector -2- and remove the Compass Magnetic Field Sensor -G197--1-.

Installing

The Compass Magnetic Field Sensor -G197- includes adhesive tape.

  • Clean the adhesive surface on the roof.

  • Connect the connector -2- to the Compass Magnetic Field Sensor -G197--1-.
  • Peel off the protective film on the Compass Magnetic Field Sensor -G197-.

Align the Compass Magnetic Field Sensor -G197- with the edge of the roof end strip -4- and the mark -3-.

  • Firmly press the Compass Magnetic Field Sensor -G197--1- onto the adhesive surface.

Install in reverse order of removal.
