Steering Lock Housing

Steering Lock Housing, Removing and Installing

Caution

Always follow the procedure as described in the Repair Manual when disconnecting and connecting the battery.

Note

To remove the steering lock housing, remove the steering column switch base carrier first.

Caution

  • The steering lock could get damaged.
  • If the steering lock is operated without the lock cylinder, it will lock up and then it will have to be replaced.
  • Steering lock must not be operated without a lock cylinder.

WARNING

Before working on electronic system and removing the steering wheel the following conditions must be met:

The technician must discharge static electricity. This is accomplished by touching grounded metal like, for example, water pipes, heating pipes, metal carriers or a heater pipe.

If this note is ignored it can result in failure of the control modules during later operation.

  • Remove the battery ground cable.
  • Wheels must be located in straight ahead position.

If this note is ignored, it can result in failure of the airbag system during later operation.

Caution

If the universal joint is separated from the steering gear, or the Steering Angle Sensor -G85- is removed, do not perform the following tasks:

  • Connecting the battery
  • Turning on the ignition
  • Turning the steering gear.
  • Turning the steering column.

These points must be followed otherwise, it can lead to irreparable damage.

Removing

  • Disconnect the battery.
  • Remove the steering column switch mount:
    • Vehicles with "Keyless Access" Locking and Starting System.
    • Vehicles with Ignition/Starter Switch and Lock Cylinder.

Lock Cylinder

Caution

Always follow the procedure as described in the Repair Manual when disconnecting and connecting the battery.

Caution

  • The steering lock could get damaged.
  • If the steering lock is operated without the lock cylinder, it will lock up and then it will have to be replaced.
  • Steering lock must not be operated without a lock cylinder.

WARNING

Before working on electronic system and removing the steering wheel the following conditions must be met:

Caution

If the universal joint is separated from the steering gear, or the Steering Angle Sensor -G85- is removed, do not perform the following tasks:

  • Connecting the battery
  • Turning on the ignition
  • Turning the steering gear.
  • Turning the steering column.

These points must be followed otherwise, it can lead to irreparable damage.

Removing

  • Disconnect the battery.
  • Remove the steering column trim panel.

Note

  • The steering column lever, the spiral spring and the steering wheel are not shown in the illustration. Components must not be removed when removing lock cylinder.
  • The immobilizer induction coil is attached to the lock cylinder and cannot be replaced separately.
  • To improve clarity, the ignition key is not shown in the following illustrations.
  • The hole can be located opposite 180º as shown in the illustration. This does not affect removing and installing.

  • Insert ignition key into lock cylinder and turn into position "Drive".

Key positions of lock cylinder:

  1. "Off" Position
  2. "Run" Position
  3. "Start" Position

Note

For reasons of clarity, the following illustration depicts lock cylinder as removed and without ignition key.

  • Insert a steel wire (approximately 1.2 mm diameter) into the hole -arrow- next to the ignition key.
  • Use the steel wire -2- to release the securing lever -3- of the lock cylinder -1--arrow-.
  • Remove the lock cylinder -1- from the steering lock housing.
  • Disconnect the connector -arrow- from the anti-theft immobilizer reader coil.

Installing

Note

To improve clarity, the ignition key is not shown in the following illustration.

  • Insert the ignition key into the lock cylinder -1- and turn to the "Drive" position.
  • Use the steel wire -2- to release the securing lever -3- of the lock cylinder -1--arrow-.
  • Connect the connector to the anti-theft immobilizer reader coil.
  • Insert the lock cylinder -1- into the steering lock housing.

Note

Connection of induction coil for anti-theft immobilizer must be inserted into guide on steering lock housing.

  • Pull the steel wire -2- out of the lock cylinder -1- and then make sure the lock cylinder is secure inside the steering column housing.
  • Reinstall all components accordingly in the reverse order.

Ignition/Starter Switch

Ignition/Starter Switch, Removing and Installing

Caution

Always follow the procedure as described in the Repair Manual when disconnecting and connecting the battery.

Removing

  • Remove the steering column trim panel.
  • Release and disconnect the connector -2- from the ignition/starter switch -1-.
  • Insert the ignition key into the lock cylinder and the key to the "Run" position.

  • Free up the hole -2- under the seal -3-.
  • Remove the cover -1- in the direction of -arrow- using a small screwdriver.

Continuation for All Vehicles

  • Unlock the ignition/starter switch using 2 small screwdrivers -arrows-.
  • Remove the ignition/starter switch -1- from the steering lock housing.

Installing

  • Insert ignition key into lock cylinder and turn into position "Drive".
  • Install the ignition switch into the steering lock housing until it clicks into place.

Note

The key must be in the "Run" position.

Key positions of lock cylinder:

  1. "Off" Position
  2. "Run" Position
  3. "Start" Position
  • Turn the ignition key to the "Stop" position.
  • Install all the parts in reverse order of removal.

Ignition/Starter Switch, Checking

Caution

Always follow the procedure as described in the Repair Manual when disconnecting and connecting the battery.

  • Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
  • Check the ignition/starter switch using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.

Ignition Switch, Removing and Installing, Vehicles with Keyless Access

Caution

Always follow the procedure as described in the Repair Manual when disconnecting and connecting the battery.

In vehicles with the "Keyless Access" system, the Start System Button -E378- is installed in the center console instead of the usual ignition switch in the steering column.

Ignition Switch Key Lock Solenoid -N376-

Ignition Switch Key Lock Solenoid -N376-, Removing and Installing

The Ignition Switch Key Lock Solenoid -N376- must be mounted next to the ignition/starter switch.

Note

To remove the ignition key in vehicles with a DSG transmission, move the selector lever into the "P" position and then switch off the ignition. Otherwise, the Ignition Switch Key Lock Solenoid -N376- prevents the key from being removed.

Removing

  • Remove the steering column trim panel.
  • Release the latching mechanism -2- with a suitable screwdriver.
  • Pull the Ignition Switch Key Lock Solenoid -N376--1- out of the mount in the direction of -arrow-.
  • The connector will disconnect at the same time.

Installing

  • Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

After connecting the battery, perform an output diagnostic test to activate the Ignition Switch Key Lock Solenoid -N376-.
