Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting
Overview - Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting
Battery recharging or battery jump start terminal on vehicles with the start/stop system:Note the following when charging or using the battery jump start terminal on vehicles with the Start/Stop System: first connect the charge cable to the positive terminal and then connect the body ground. This ensures that the battery sensor is not bridged. Charging the battery directly on the ground terminal will bridge the battery sensor and the battery data will not be recognized by the sensor during the charging process. The values stored in the data bus on board diagnostic interface regarding the battery condition no longer match the values for the charged battery.
WARNING
Risk of injury. Pay attention to all warnings and safety precautions.
Battery, Disconnecting
Note the following when charging or using the battery jump start terminal on vehicles with the Start/Stop System: first connect the charge cable to the positive terminal and then connect the body ground.
Note
- By disconnecting the negative battery connection (opening the circuit), it is possible to safely work on the electrical system.
- The positive battery wire only has to be disconnected to remove the Battery.
Connecting the Battery
Special tools and workshop equipment required
Note the following when charging or using the battery jump start terminal on vehicles with the Start/Stop System: first connect the charge cable to the positive terminal and then connect the body ground.
Caution
Pay attention to the information regarding the threaded connection for the battery terminals.
Note
After connecting the battery and switching the ignition on, the ASR/ESP Indicator Lamp -K155- comes on and stays on. The indicator lamp goes out automatically when vehicle is driven a distance straight ahead at 15 to 20 km/h. This reactivates the Steering Angle Sensor -G85-.
Caution
Follow the procedure in the Repair Manual when disconnecting and connecting the battery.
Central battery venting hose must not be kinked, closed and/or damaged. Battery acids pose health risks and are explosive. Carefully route the hose making sure the battery is free and cannot emit any vapors into the passenger compartment.
Steps After Connecting the Battery
Steps | Performed |
Switch on ignition using ignition key and switch off again.
Read the DTC memory on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
Clock: Check the local time and reset if necessary.
Power windows: Completely open and close all power windows.
Function test: all electrical equipment |
The table can be printed out if necessary.
