Belt Tensioners, Safety Precautions

Caution

  • Testing, assembly, and repair work may only be performed by qualified personnel.
  • Belt tensioner components may not be opened nor repaired; always use new parts (risk of injury).
  • Belt tensioner units that were subject to hard blows or have been dropped on the floor, must not be installed in a vehicle.
  • Belt tensioner units that are mechanically damaged (dents, cracks) must always be replaced.
  • Storage and transport is subject to laws governing explosive materials.
  • Belt tensioner units should be installed immediately after removing them from the shipping package.
  • An impact wrench may not be used to remove the belt tensioner.
  • The belt tensioner unit is to be returned to shipping package when work is interrupted.
  • It is not permitted to leave the belt tensioner unit unattended.
  • The belt tensioner unit may not be treated with grease, cleaning agents, or similar materials, and may not be exposed, even briefly, to temperatures above 100 ºC (212 ºF).
  • The pyrotechnic propellant has no expiration date, this means it has an unlimited service life and is maintenance-free.

Belt Tensioner Unit Disposal

  • Belt tensioner units with pyrotechnic ignition charge that have not ignited must be returned in original packaging for proper recycling/disposal in accordance with national legislation! If questions arise, contact the distributor or importer!
  • Belt tensioner units that have ignited can be disposed of as industrial waste.

Front Seat Belts, Removing and Installing

Removing

Note

The following describes the removing and installing on the left side of the vehicle. Removing and installing on the right side is identical.

WARNING

Observe safety precautions for belt tensioners.

  • Disconnect the vehicle battery.
  • Remove the B-pillar upper trim panel.
  • Remove the B-pillar lower trim panel.

  • Remove the bolt -1- (40 Nm) and remove the belt end fitting -2- from body.

Volswagen Tiguan. N69-10330

  • Remove the two bolts -1- (4.5 Nm) and remove the belt relay -2-.

Note

When installing, make sure the belt relay is correctly installed.

  • Remove the bolt -1- (40 Nm) and loosen the seat belt guide -2- from the belt height adjuster.

  • Remove the bolt -1- (40 Nm) and the automatic belt retractors -2- from the B-pillar.

WARNING

Electrostatic charges may result in involuntary deployment of the belt tensioner. Therefore, the technician must discharge static electricity from the body before disconnecting the ignition wire and ground wire. This is done, for example, by briefly touching the body or the door striker.

  • Disconnect the wiring harness from the automatic belt retractor.

Installing

  • Install in reverse order of removal.
  • Connect the battery.

Note

The following describes the removing and installing on the left side of the vehicle. Removing and installing on the right side is identical.

Removing

WARNING

Observe safety precautions for belt tensioners.

  • Disconnect the vehicle battery.
  • Remove the upper B-pillar trim panel from the mounts.
  • Remove the lower B-pillar trim panel.

  • Remove the two bolts -1- (20 Nm).
  • Loosen the belt end fitting tensioner -2- from the side sill.

  • Thread the belt end fitting tensioner -1- through the B-pillar trim -2-.

  • Remove the two bolts -1- (4.5 Nm) and remove the belt relay -2-.

Note

When installing, make sure the belt relay is correctly installed.

  • Remove the bolt -1- (40 Nm) and remove the seat belt guide -2- from the belt height adjuster.
  • Remove the bolt -1- (40 Nm) and the automatic belt retractors -2- from the B-pillar.

Installing

  • Install in reverse order of removal.

WARNING

  • Do not remove the protective cover on the belt end fitting tensioner -2- when installing.
  • When installing the belt end fitting tensioner -2-, make sure its protective cover is not damaged by the two bolts -1-.
  • The two bolts -1- must be flush with the belt end fitting tensioner -2- after installing.
  • Do not twist the seat belt webbing when installing!

  • Connect the battery.

Front Seat Belt Height Adjuster, Removing and Installing

Note

The following describes the removing and installing on the left side of the vehicle. Removing and installing on the right side is identical.

Removing

  • Remove the B-pillar upper trim panel.

Note

It is not necessary to remove the belt end fitting from the front seat belt.

  • Remove the bolt -1- (40 Nm) and loosen the seat belt guide -2- from the belt height adjuster.
  • Remove the bolt -3- (20 Nm) and separate belt height adjuster -4- from mount in the carrier plate.

Installing

  • Install in reverse order of removal.

Front Seat Belt Latches, Removing and Installing

Note

The following describes removing and installing the seat belt latch on the left seat. Removing and installing the seat belt latch on the right side is identical.

Removing

  • Remove the front seat.
  • Cut the mesh hose cable tie and pull the harness connector seat belt latch through it.
  • Remove the bolt -1- (40 Nm).
  • Remove the seat belt latch -2- from the mount in the seat frame -3-.

Installing

  • Install in reverse order of removal.

Outer Rear Seat Belts, Removing and Installing, Vehicles without Rear Side Airbag

Note

The following describes the removing and installing on the left side of the vehicle. Removing and installing on the right side is identical.

Removing

  • Remove the rear wheel housing trim (without rear side airbag).
  • Remove the rear sill panel.
  • Remove the C-pillar trim panel.

  • Remove the bolt -1- (40 Nm) and remove the belt end fitting -2- from body.

  • Remove the bolt -1- (40 Nm) and the automatic belt retractors -2- from the mount.

Installing

  • Install in reverse order of removal.

Outer Rear Seat Belts, Removing and Installing, Vehicles with Rear Side Airbag

Note

The following describes the removing and installing on the left side of the vehicle. Removing and installing on the right side is identical.

Removing

WARNING

Follow all safety precautions when working on an airbag.

  • Disconnect the vehicle battery.
  • Remove the rear wheel housing trim (with rear side airbag).
  • Remove the rear sill panel.
  • Remove the luggage compartment floor panel cover from the vehicle.
  • Remove the spare tire from the vehicle.
  • Remove the inserts from the vehicle.
  • Remove the lock carrier cover.
  • Remove the side luggage compartment trim panel.
  • Remove roof end strip.
  • Remove the C-pillar trim panel.

  • Remove the bolt -1- (40 Nm) and remove the belt end fitting -2- from body.

  • Disconnect the connector -1-.
  • Remove the bolt -2- (40 Nm) and the automatic belt retractors -3- from the mount.

Installing

  • Install in reverse order of removal.

Rear Center 3-Point Seat Belt, Removing and Installing

Overview

Volswagen Tiguan. Rear Center 3-Point Seat Belt, Removing and Installing

  1. Bracket
  2. Automatic Belt Retractor
  3. Hex Nut
    • 40 Nm
  4. Bolt
    • 40 Nm
  5. Belt End Fitting

Removing

  • Remove the left segment of the bench seat.
  • Remove the cover and cushion from the backrest.

  • Remove the nut -1- (40 Nm) and remove automatic belt retractors -2- from the bracket -1-.

Installing

  • Install in reverse order of removal.

Rear Seat Belt Latches, Removing and Installing

Removing

Left Seat Belt Latch

  • Fold the left bench seat backrest forward until the seat cushion moves forward.
  • Hold the seat cushion in this position and fold back the backrest.
  • Remove the bolt -2- (40 Nm) and remove the left seat belt latch -1- from the seat frame.

Center Seat Belt Latch

  • Remove the left segment of the bench seat.
  • Remove the bench seat backrest adjustment trim.
  • Remove the bolt -3- (40 Nm) and remove the center seat belt latch -4- from the seat frame.

Right Seat Belt Latch

  • Fold the right bench seat backrest forward until the seat cushion moves forward.
  • Hold the seat cushion in this position and fold back the backrest.

Volswagen Tiguan. N69-10334

  • Remove the bolt -5- (40 Nm) and remove the right seat belt latch -6- from the seat frame.

Installing

  • Install in reverse order of removal.
